The author is from the Gitxsan Nation, a people whose traditional territory is located in the Northwest Interior of British Columbia. The Sockeye Mother describes the many connections between the sockeye salmon, the Skeena River valley ecosystem and the Gitxsan people.

Text features include word boxes, labels, a map and some background information about the Gitxsan culture. Accessible to fluent readers in the late primary and intermediate grades, this book is a rich source of information and fits well with the Social Studies and Science curriculums.
