This is the second book in the Uumajut series. It contains information and detailed illustrations for a number of wildlife species found throughout Nunavut. Young readers will learn about the appearance, behaviour, diet and habitat of the muskox, ermine, wolf, eider duck, ringed seal, harp seal, walrus, narwhal and polar bear. The traditional Inuit uses for some of these animals are also included.

Classroom Connections: Uumajut is a colourful little book filled with scientific facts as well as some traditional Inuit knowledge about northern wildlife. Written in English and Inuktitut, it provides enough information for younger students who are undertaking fact-finding projects. The accurate and detailed watercolour illustrations also provide teachers with a convenient template for visualization exercises that could improve their students’ recognition of the animals and their habitats.
