In 1954 the government of Newfoundland began a resettlement program. People were asked to relocate from small, isolated communities to more populated areas. As the cost of getting supplies to the more remote locations was increasing, this was an economic decision.
The Island is the story of one such community. Lori Doody tells this historical tale through the use of simple language and bold, colourful illustrations. It is accessible to young readers and would also make a great read-aloud. The author’s note at the end of the book describes the continued feeling of connection her family has to Colinet Island and the lingering memories they have of their original home there.
Classroom Connections: The Island provides many opportunities for primary school students to engage in discussions about this historical event (e.g., How is life simpler in larger communities?). There are also opportunities for students to practise reading strategies such as making connections, asking questions, and making predictions.
