October is Marine Month

by

Canada’s third annual Marine Month returns this October, inviting students in grades 5 through 12 to explore the rich maritime heritage and dynamic career opportunities within the marine sector. This nationwide initiative connects classrooms with leading marine industry professionals, offering students an insider’s look at exciting career paths available across the country. Presented by Canadian Geographic Education in partnership with the Canadian Marine Careers Foundation (CMCF) and its Imagine Marine campaign, Marine Month in Canada delivers a comprehensive program featuring live virtual events, interactive classroom resources, and a prize contest exclusively for educators. This unique endeavour integrates marine careers with STEM education to engage and inspire the future workforce. This year’s lineup includes live presentations and expert sessions from prominent industry leaders such as Canada Steamship Lines (CSL), British Columbia Coast Pilots, Port of Montreal, Canadian Coast Guard, Royal Canadian Navy, and Algoma Central Corporation. The program offers a behindthe- scenes perspective on the diverse roles within the marine sector, including many positions that are less visible to the public. Teachers and career counselors will have access to a suite of interactive educational materials, including videos, quizzes, and online lesson plans. These resources are designed to facilitate exploration of marine careers, required skillsets, responsibilities, and training pathways both before and after the live events. Curriculum-based classroom activities tailored for grades 5 through 8 will integrate marine industry themes with subjects such as science, mathematics, communication, environmental studies, and economics.
