The most important thing I have to say at the moment is: Buy Canadian Books!
Canada is home to many book publishers, all reflecting the unique geography and culture of our wonderful country. In case you don’t already know this, there is a book publishers association—the Association of Canadian Publishers (ACP)—which is “the voice of English-language Canadian-owned independent book publishers.” The ACP website lists book publishers by region. To explore the wealth of home-grown titles, visit publishers.ca and click “Our Members” in the menu bar. There, you can select a province or territory to find a list of publishers and click through to their websites to browse their titles.
Another great resource for teachers is the Canadian Children’s Book Centre, a not-for-profit organization that has been dedicated to promoting quality Canadian books for young readers for more than 45 years. You will find many resources and lots of information about Canadian children’s books and their authors and illustrators on the website (bookcentre.ca).
There has never been a more important time to support Canadian book publishers, so use your school budgets wisely to share the imagination and talent of Canadian creators with your students!
