This hopeful and helpful anthology was created by experienced educators with the aim of assisting teachers to integrate Indigenous perspectives and learning strategies into their classroom routines—not to teach lessons or courses about the history of Indigenous Peoples but to present contemporary Indigenous voices and traditional ways of thinking. The title “Resurgence” was chosen to reflect the rising up of Indigenous perspectives after a long history of repression. This resurgence is being driven by Indigenous people who are taking action to express Indigenous knowledge and culture, and it’s giving a voice to those who have been affected by the historical treatment of their people by a society that arrived as newcomers.

The book comprises sixteen “texts”—poems and essays—contributed by people from across North America and organized under four headings: Resistance, Resilience, Restoring, and Reconnecting. Each is accompanied by information thoughtfully designed to help you use the text in your classroom. Reflections from the editors come first, followed by suggestions for inquiry and actions for you as an educator, discussion questions, and inquiry ideas to lead your students to greater understanding. Lists of related resources are also included. You will want to keep this volume on your desk and use it frequently throughout the school year to explore information, ideas, and emotions with your students.
